Infos about affordable and unique walking safaris in the exclusive big-five Greater Kruger National Park of South Africa

There is a world of difference between experiencing a safari in Africa on foot, "old style", than from the tinted windows of a luxury bus! To walk is to be on even ground with African wildlife, sharing their paths and waterholes, the daily dramas of their lives, sharing their space. To walk is to follow tracks, feel the tingle of your own senses, and hear the beating of your heart as you edge closer to a herd of elephant, feeding in the river. Sleeping in a tent, under the Jackelberry trees in the Camp, with only the canvas of your tent between you and the bush - it's an experience not easily forgotten. A safari is a journey of the body and the soul, a venture into the unknown and an opportunity to face some of the mysteries of nature. This safari company believes in the magic of the bush, and it strives to offer that “once in a lifetime experience” to all of their guests.

WHERE? The operation is based in Greater Kruger National Park, but transfers can be arranged on a shuttle between Johannesburg Airport and area hotels (Johannesburg) and Hoedspruit, Limpopo. Your safari starts on arrival at a lovely base camp on the edge of the Greater Kruger from where open 4x4 Land Rovers transport you to the exclusive, unfenced tented camp where you will stay during your walking safari.

There are no fences between Kruger National Park it's neighboring private reserves. This area is called Greater Kruger National Park. The advantage of traveling through exclusive wilderness areas of Greater Kruger is their privacy. The Camp accommodation is exclusive to the guests of the walking safaris only.

WHO ARE THE GUESTS? The walking safari trails appeal to an adventurous mind, keen on a travel - learning experience. Every walk is a book on its own, with an emphasis on the wonders of nature, big and small. Due to the safety precautions for all trailists, the minimum age guest allowed on trail is 16. Although there is no maximum age, our walks can last up to 6 hours and tracking might lead the trail through thick bush, riverbeds, and gullies. Therefore an average fitness level is required, especially in the hotter summer months (Nov - March).  Each trails guide and backup guide walk with a maximum of eight guests.

HOW DO WALKING TRAILS OPERATE? The safari company operates two trails per week: Monday - Friday (5-day / 4-night) and every Friday - Monday (4-day / 3-night). The camp is open throughout the year and all departures are guaranteed, however bookings need to be made in advance. The unfenced camp is private and secluded and not open to day visitors.

INFOS ABOUT THE CAMP: The Camp can sleep up to twelve (12) people in large, walk-in, twin-bedded tents. Linen and towels are provided. The windows and doors have mosquito screens, so mosquito netting is not needed. Ablutions are separate, but close, with solar-panel-heated showers and flush toilets. Although there is no electricity, there are lanterns, candles, and a campfire to guide you around the camp at night. Meals are prepared in the kitchen tent and served in the dining tent. Each safari is accompanied by one or two experienced and armed guides and the Camp is serviced by two camp attendants and a camp host.

A TYPICAL DAY: The combination of walks and drives in the open game drive vehicle are dependent upon weather and animal movement. Taking such factors into consideration, the guides always make sure to remember that the primary focus is to walk.  All activities start from camp in the early mornings, late afternoons, and at night.

Each safari is basic and designed to experience the bush the way one  should:  on foot. After the first walk you’ll realise you’ve gone back in time – one with your ancestors who roamed these African trails. Although you must always remember: you are in a large wilderness area, interacting with nature. A walking safaris is where you will learn about the often overlooked gems throughout the bush, as much as it is about experiencing the "big five within their own territory. It is about experiencing the process of tracking, reading the signs of game from spoor, scat and markings to symbiotic relationships and species behavior. Although there are no guarantees on sightings, the company guarantees a real bush experience!

Author Norman Carr: “The wilderness is something special. To me, the only way to experience the real spirit of Africa is on foot. Away from the noise and turmoil of modern society, it truly helps you to get your terrestrial problems into perspective.”
